“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” as the saying goes, and colleagues who have trained under and adopted the techniques of leading weight-loss surgery specialist Dr. Bobby Bhasker-Rao bear out this truth. Celebrating his 15th year of practice in the Coachella Valley, Bhasker- Rao — or Dr. Bobby as his patients prefer to call him — holds the distinction of being the most experienced robotic bariatric surgeon on the West Coast. In fact, he has marked completion of his 1,000th surgery utilizing the renowned da Vinci robotic surgical system — and his success is ongoing. “The technology my practice offers helps us maintain our superior outcomes — a zero mortality rate and zero major complication rates,” he says. Over the last year, Dr. Bobby has become even more involved in training experienced bariatric surgeons who are eager to embrace his methods.
A true pioneer
As an early adopter of robotics, Dr. Bobby was selected to serve as one of the prime educators for the manufacturer of the da Vinci robot. “I teach surgeons in my operating room who come here to observe, and I travel to their hospitals and train them on their own cases. I also teach advancedlevel courses at training centers across the country,” he says. His preeminence in the field serves his patients well as they continue to benefit from his expertise. Bariatric surgery will result in weight loss, but Dr. Bobby always has his eye on a bigger prize. Obesity sufferers’ prime motivation may be to shed pounds, but they are often surprised to learn that a single operation can clear up chronic health problems that have plagued them for years.
“We don’t do these procedures simply for weight loss. We perform them for medical reasons. Multiple co-morbidities are resolved virtually overnight,” Dr. Bobby explains. Conditions like Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, joint disease, and liver disease are just a few examples of the approximately 30 co-morbidities associated with obesity that can and do occur. “When speaking at my seminars, I still encounter patients who are shocked, and simultaneously thrilled, to learn that they can be rid of their diabetes. Outcomes such as this are truly what make my job so rewarding.”
A solid support system
Naturally, follow-up is critical to a patient’s success. Dr. Bobby relies on the expertise of his on-staff dietitian Courtney Pogue, M.S., R.D., who customizes complete nutrition, exercise, and behavioral modification plans for each patient, both pre- and postprocedure. Individuals who are merely in the information-gathering stage are welcome to attend the free bariatric surgery seminars presented twice a month by Dr. Bobby and staff. The support meetings usually feature a guest speaker; in many instances former patients have inspiring stories to tell.
Recognized as one of the “Top Surgeons in the Nation” — as noted in The New York Times — for the seventh year in a row, Dr. Bobby has also earned a ranking among America’s Most Honored Professionals Top 1% in 2017-2019. Nationally recognized as Best of the Best among Bariatric Surgeons, he’s received the Best of Palm Springs Physician award and graced the list of Top Doctors revealed in an independent survey of the Greater Palm Springs area. He also continues in his role as Director of the Bariatric Surgery Program at Eisenhower Health Center. It was recently re-accredited as a comprehensive bariatric program and a Center of Excellence by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program. Upon recent evaluation, it is one of the only programs in the country able to boast a zero-mortality rate.
