Celebrating 50 Years of Broadcasting in the Desert

In 1968, KMIR sent out the very first television signal across the Coachella Valley. The signal broadcast from top of the tower at the El Mirador Hotel, which is where the “MIR” in KMIR originates. That signal sent NBC programming from Palm Springs to the Salton Sea, across what original station owner, John Conte, called “our magnificent desert empire.” Over the years, KMIR added locally-produced content hosted by veterans of TV and movies a local news broadcast that emanated from KMIR’s new home in Palm Desert. We take pride in our commitment to the valley and all of its great causes. KMIR News has been there for all of the tragedies and triumphs throughout the years. As the Valley continues to grow, so does KMIR, providing our communities with coverage of stories and events unique to the desert. We at KMIR want to thank all of our loyal viewers. We plan on being here for another fifty years, at least!
